I Having spent ages trying to find the right configuration files in a complex PHP.FPM / nginx / Apache host set up, and tried other plugins that told me Wordpress was limiting my uploads, but that couldn't give me enough extra upload capacity.
This plug in worked a treat - I needed 2GB upload capability as we share software downloads and this sorted out the Wordpress limitation straightaway.
