This Hit Counter plugin is lightweight and won't slow down your website. You can display the number of Unique Visitors or Page-views anywhere on your site using widgets or shortcodes. The counter keeps counting even when you don't have a widget or shortcode active, but you can disable it by disabling the plugin.Screenshots
