Aside from doing what it says on the tin, this plugin offers free useful features that the competition lock behind paywalls.
What is more, it is the only one I have tested that will actually clean up after itself once removed. Two other similar popular plugins I have tested will leave a lot of database junk behind.
Great tool and support

Matomo is industry standard. On par with Google Analytics, but without the GDPR implications. The WordPress plugin is just perfect for small to mid traffic sites where a separate Matomo instance would seem like overkill. Users love the reports, admin (me) loves product quality, performance and responsive support. True 5 star experience.

Som sagt på andra recensioner är det en liten startsträcka för att komma igång, men när det är gjort - kanon! Perfekt verktyg för dig som vill ha koll på besökare hellre än mäta marknadsvärden. Bra integration med cookie-verktyg, bra instruktioner.

Мне не нравится, когда мои контакты без разрешения записывают на свои сервера, постоянно меняют интерфейс, создают дополнительные условия со сбором личных данных. Я нашла Вас - прекрасную альтернативу, чтобы работать, а не тратить массу моего рабочего времени на разбор очередных "хотелок" "продвинутого и современного" .... не буду писать кого.

Excellent tool - steep learning curve but good support

An excellent free tool for tracking cookieless analytics, however not the most intuitive. My plugin collects links twice each time, plus appears to split the same user into different sessions, so not the most accurate. If you're not a paid user, there's no support other than a voluntary forum, where lots of answers go unreplied. To be honest that seems fair for a free tool, but it does mean parts of the plugin remain a mystery.
That said, I've been able to set-up and track tags, just as with GA, by following the tutorials on the developer's site.
My WordPress dashboard has displayed Matomo diagnostics warnings since installation about charset and logs which I've never been able to fix, so getting a seamless experience may also depend on your hosting.
Edit - July 31, 2024: Seems fair that I add a star to my review. The plugin does have a steeper learning curve than some, but the free support I've received on this forum has been top notch.

La version de base gratuite est une bonne alternative à son célèbre concurrent. L'installation via l'extension sur wordpress est très simple en revanche si vous hébergez la solution sur votre serveur c'est un peu plus long mais très efficace. Merci
100% data ownership, integrates well with leading GDPR plugin, helpful community

Meanwhile, the issue was resolved, so I updated my review. The plugin integrates smoothly with the Complianz plugin (cookie banner/GDPR) and provides all the information I need.
The 100% data ownership is a great asset and lets me sleep well regarding GDPR compliance.
Unfortunately, Wordfence today reported a medium security issue in the plugin, but in the fast-paced online world, no plugin is safe from that.

After installing and activating the plugin, my WP site continuously reported "internal server errors" (it became unusable). It took me some patience and several page-reloads to open the plugin directory, deactivate, and finally uninstall the Matomo WP plugin.
Several users report similar issues online (Matomo Forum & GitHub). Others report similar findings with WP 6.2 and PHP 8.x.
While I am sure the community is willing to analyze and fix those issues, a plugin that tears down my site is barely unusable, and I completely lost trust.
Nevertheless, good luck to this open source project and lots of success to the community behind it.
